About Us

Our Story

Mac & Ethel’s is inspired by the life of Virginia McFarlane Neese, or “Ginny” as she was affectionately known. Ginny’s corn casseroles and pecan pies were the unrivaled stars of every family gathering. At the high school where she worked, Ginny secretly fed students whose families were struggling to make ends meet on a daily basis. The full extent of Ginny’s giving remained unknown until after she passed away from ovarian cancer and leukemia. Ginny loved animals, and she was known to never be short on treats for her two dogs Mac & Ethel, for whom our bakery is named. Ginny did much more than feed others she nourished an entire community with her love.

We Give Back

Mac & Ethel’s is a food brand with a purpose. We donate 5% of our annual profits to charity. In honor of Ginny, our very first donation benefited cancer patients. 

At Mac & Ethel’s, our menu is filled with a variety of gourmet cookies and shortbreads, brownies and blondies, and more desserts. Like Ginny’s casseroles and pies, every item is baked by hand with the love. Start by ordering our classic shortbread which you can customize to your heart’s content with fine chocolate, fruit and nuts and our tropical Hawaiian and boozy Irish Coffee Cookies.

Our Staff

The Chef 

Linda Young is a recipe developer and proud home chef from Montreal, whose unique take on classic shortbread caused a stir when she relocated to Alabama. After many years of encouragement, Linda is finally bringing her beloved recipe to the masses. Linda was one of Ginny’s best friends, and shortbread was the last thing she baked for Ginny before we lost her. Shortbread is the backbone of everything we do at Mac & Ethel’s, and Linda can’t wait for more Americans to fall in love with it.

The Manager 

Vanessa Young is a social work student with years of experience in the online retail space. She is the glue that holds Mac & Ethel’s together. She is a mother of two wonderful boys.
